Default Amex Centurion Membership Decreased in 2008

I have heard that the total cardmember base for the American Express Centurion decreased slightly within the US over the past 12 months. I do not have access to any specific numbers and obviously we cannot confirm this piece of information for sure, but this is something which seems like a natural circumstance given the economic conditions.

I think your part of the world may be the only part that still has a growing economy. Here in the US many cardholders are downgrading from Centurion to Platinum or canceling their American Express altogether.

No, HongKong also face the economic problem as other countries.
I have created an AmEx Cards Fans Club at facebook,
some of HongKong members told us that some of their friends who is holding the Platinum Card have got the Centurion invitation.
But an AmEx staff told me that the approval is much tight now respones to the economic problem.

It's hard to say for sure. We can be sure though that American Express would never say their credit requirements for the Centurion card are not tight. They will always make the card seem and sound as exclusive as possible, even if it is not quite as exclusive as they make it sound. In an area like Hong Kong I would imagine it's not as rare since the incomes of so many business men there qualify.
Disclosure: I am a moderator/paid staff of this site, which does have advertising relationships with some credit cards that are discussed. Regardless, anything I say is my honest opinion.

    Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Citi Thank You Premier

I think it is still pretty exclusive, Mr. Mogul. I mean, only 20,000 in the entire USA? Spending $250k in one year is no small feat and usually means your're at the top 1% of income in the USA, not everyone, but most, and of those, less than .05% have one... wow. What are you basing your judgements on, jealousy? I have a card. I can make it less exclusive by adding additional cardholders, but it still costs a fortune and that alone can make it pretty darn exclusive.

No offense or anything, but I would like to understand what you are basing your assumptions on.
