If that's common then either customers are being careless with their card info or there's a big breach of security going on at the banks.
Yes. That's what I thought as well. Look it up online. There are videos showing some of these boiler room operations in hina. I'm not a gamer so I don't really understand what their motivation/payoff is but it is apparently a big deal.

It is also possible, if you poke around the right places online, to buy list of thousands of credit card numbers. Someone is sniffing those out in some automated way! And let's not forget, teh security of DVDs was hacked very quickly. The DES standard used by banks was also cracked several years ago.

    Look up "gold farming"...

    Here's how it works:

Gold farms in china, indonesia, romania, and elsewhere use stolen credit card info to buy licenses for games like World of Warcraft that are multiplayer, networked games. They use the fraudulently obtained access to accumulate stuff (money etc.) within the game world. They then sell the stuff for real hard cash on websites like ige.com to people who pay in the real world for the game-world stuff.

If these game sites are just a front for crime/money laundering then why aren't they being shut down or blocked by card issuers???

That's a good question. I don't think the game publishers themselves are in on it. But they could stop it by making it impossible to profit from it.

In my case there were fraudulent charges by Blizzard Entertainment, the publisher of World of Warcraft. I have never used or had anything to do with that company or the game. I called them to report the fraud and they threatened to sue me if I contacted the police (in writing, the idiots). THAT threat was a criminal act! I pointed that out to them and their general counsel and soon got a written apology AND they reversed the charges promptly. To their credit, in spite of having untrained idoits answering the phones, they did act properly once I made someone with a brain aware of the fraud.

I've also had the experience that suddenly there was my credit card bill from a new online company overseas. Without asking my consent, the company is charging me for a direct payment to my credit card without asking my consent.
When I complained via email, the company did not respond to my objections. They divert the conversation by asking the survey about what services are less of them.
They do not mind me. They even promise that the service the less will be continuously improved. Yes, the conversation I do not connect with their answers.
The only way I would only change t his credit card so the next time they can not just charge my credit card without my consent. Because, the bank that issued the credit claimed can not do anything about the arrival of the bill.
