Default spouse credit card fraud - Ex-girlfriend woes

I just got a call today from a debt collector. My name is on an account that has defaulted and over $8,000 is owned upon it. No payments have been made since June of 2009.

A few years ago a girlfriend put me on her credit card, we both used it. When we broke up it was a very easy break and I paid off everything on that card (just being nice, I had a much better job $ wise) and we went our separate ways.

The debtor said they cannot reach her, and since I am a "cosigner" that I'm now the responsible party to pay this crazy thing off. I have no intention of paying for whatever mistakes she made since we've broken up.

She was supposed to remove me from the card. I tried to call Chase and have them remove me but I can't without her permission. She will not return my messages and apparently has no interest in saving my bacon.

What are my options? This is a huge amount of money for me!!

Why did they refuse to take you off of a card if there was no debt on the card when u asked that makes zero sense.

If u knew u were still on the card when she did this then I think u might be screwed. Sorry man.

The question is why would Chase take you off now? They would just lose any chance of you paying them.

Sorry dude, you are going to have to pay this if you value your credit. You can collect from your old gf but as far as teh cc company is concerned, you owe them.

Chase said I wasn't the primary account holder and could not make any changes to the account without her Social Security # (which I don't have). So I could not remove myself.

I have email conversations between the two of us with me requesting to be taken off the card (over a year ago) so that's on record.

I'm looking for a lawyer in my area now to help me handle this.

Ok I just found out that I was an 'Authorized User' on the card and NOT a cosigner. Apparently there's a big difference.

It looks like I may actually be in the clear and this won't affect my credit score?

This surely won't affect your credit score, the reason why some people doesn't want an authorize user because they don't have any control over them and sometimes this really give them a bad head ache if they don't pay their dues each month, and that doesn't affects the Authorize users much when it comes to credit score.

If that's the case, I would say you should be in the clear. Of course it wouldn't be a bad idea to call up the credit card company to confirm. You know it is, some customer service reps have a few screws loose up there and don't always give accurate advice... so I say it's best to double check something like this. Confirm they don't have your Social Security on file.
