About LinkBacksHi, my girlfriends thief of a mother decided to take my girlfriends credit/debit card (without any prior permission) and rack up almost $1000 in transactions with no intent of paying any of that amount back. My girlfriend did not notice the card missing for roughly one month, and when she was going to report the card stolen, her mother admitted to having the card and gave it back. This is not the first time she has taken money from her but, before she was linked to her account since it was opened before she was 18, but was taken off of the account when she was of age.What I'm wondering is what can be done to get those transactions removed from her account, what proof will be needed, what legal consequence it will have on the mother, and where to begin since this is becoming quite a problem. Thanks in advance.

This is a repeated problem? The mother needs to be held accountable. Give her two options- pay back the full amount in X number of days or file charges with the police for credit card fraud. Remind her that the amount of credit card fraud would constitute a felony. If you let her off the hook she will keep doing it, probably to an even greater extent next time.

Agreed with MOP, Let your girlfriend choose criminal and or civil charges against the mother or pay the card off herself. She cant both have the card charged back and have no one held accountable sounds like the girlfriend has some choices to make. Let us know what you choose......

And it sounds like his girlfriend needs a dose or reality anyway. I doubt this is her first screwup. Anyone that would pull a stunt like this, it tells us that they have probably been pulling off a lot of other things and getting away with it until now.

Your GF needs to report the theft to the police and to the credit card company. There is a good chance the mother will be arrested and could spend time in jail. It's a sad situation but the mother will do it again and again until she suffers for her actions. I cannot imagine anything more despicable than stealing from ones own children.

MOP, DH, and alsteig are correct in saying that the mother should be held responsible for the theft and should be reported to the police. However, I also suggest to have the mother checked by a psychiatrist, she might have other problems than stealing.
