Default Think a surcharge would count as fraud??

The morning after the election I bought two newspapers at a newstand and they tried charging me a surcharge of 75 cents...from what I've read on here those aren't allowed right? I had to argue eventually with the owner for him to waive it.

I was thinking from now on instead of arguing I would follow thru with the purchase and then call up my card customer service and report it as fraud because they charged me a surcharge....Would this fly?

Two copies of a weekday paper? Wouldn't that be like $1 or less?

There's a reason I charged newspapers on my credit cards....the newstand was charging over double the sticker price on the papers. They were supposed to be 50 cents each and they charged $1.00 a piece and that wasn't including the $0.75 surchage. Don't you think if they are marking up prices that much I should be able to pay with a card? .....If they had fair pricing I would have paid with cash.

It is totally legal. It is up to you to pay cash or not. It is nothing new that especially smaller businesses require a certain amount (most cases $10-$20) or they'll charge you an additional service fee. As long as they pay taxes on it it is legal

In many Asian countries they add the entire charge fee on the bill no matter how much it is. If you tip them with the card you'll pay also the fee for the tip charge. Just to give you an idea of how lucky we are in the USA.
