    Default Let's replace parking meters with credit card reades!



    I'm sick and tired of running to the bank for rolls of quarters to pay the stupid parking meters. Some run as much as $2 an hour too so you can go through the coins fast.

    Why not replace the coins with credit card terminals? They may charge fees but when you think of the costs it takes to collect the coins and then transport them to process it would be a break-even IMO.

    Meters are only 25 cents an hour where I live. Why use a credit card on such a tiny transactions?

    It's still a good idea if you're working in a building for 8 hours and don't want to run out after every hour to feed the meter.

    It would be a more efficient way for both us and the cities. I know some cities have created card systems or keys to use. The reason they probably haven't transitioned to credit cards yet is out of greed - they don't want to pay any fees. The problem is people travel and cannot possibly have keys/cards for every single city they visit.

    A credit card system for parking would be the easiest solution.

    Way , way back - late 1960s when I worked in downtown San Franciso, getting a parking ticket was cheaper than regularly feeding the meter for 8 hrs or parking in a parking lot. It was actually cheaper getting a ticket every day than parking legally/paying for parking. After a newspaper article pointed this out parking ticket fines were dramatically increased.

    It's funny how situations like that happen and people don't realize it until a big deal is made out of them. That reminds me of the pizzeria around the corner from me where buying 8 single slices of pizza is 15% or so cheaper than buying a whole pizza of the same size.

    Regardless, the fees we pay now are excessive. Parking tickets in Los Angeles run a minimum of $65 and that was 4 years ago when I got a ticket. Then if you're bumper is in a red or yellow zone or some other circumstance, the fee can more than double.

    There's no reason penalties like this should be so much. I remember just in the 90's when parking tickets were still a small fraction of what they are today. We have really seen these fees shoot up as cities have turned them into a major revenue source.

    Got a better idea.

    Replace parking meters with signs that say FREEEEEEE like the mattress commercial says. Parking shouldn't be a privilege of those only with the moolah!!!

    This could work but keep in mind the government is notoriously slow with adapting new technologies. Up until recently most DMVs would not even accept ATM or credit cards.

    only visa and mc, though. swipe and wait forever for the receipt to put on your dash. time sold in increments of a buck/5 bucks. still it's rather convenient.
