Priceline Credit Card Review – Don’t Apply Without Reading!
William Shatner might make the Priceline credit card look cute, but here’s what’s really behind the Priceline Rewards Visa card…
There used to be 2 cards from Priceline (1 w/ $29 annual fee and 1 w/o) but apparently in 2012, they chopped their offerings down because there is only one card on their website now. Here's a review of it...
Priceline Visa Card Review
Issued by Barclays, I haven't seen this advertised anywhere except on Priceline.com. It used to be a boring credit card offer but they've definitely spiced things up:
- 2x points on normal purchases
- 5x points on "Name Your Own Price" purchases. All other purchases on Priceline will only earn 2x points.
This is a lot better than the Priceline card before, because it only gave 2 points on ONE category of spending: utilities, grocery stores, or home improvement. So if you have an old account that was grandfathered in, call and convert it to the newer rewards program that gives 2x points on everything. How are much are the Priceline reward points worth? The credit card application on the website doesn't do a good job discussing the value of the points. However I did some digging around and the points can be used like basically like cash at penny per point conversion.
How do you use your Priceline reward points? They can be redeemed for past purchases of $25 or more (so that means the minimum is 2,500 for cashing out). What's interesting is that it appears the points can be used on any purchase (not just Priceline purchases) which obviously makes this a very versatile program.
What are the benefits that come with the credit card? Well they don't talk about it much but a Priceline Visa Signature card is pictured, so that means you would be getting Visa Signature benefits. That would also mean it has no preset credit limit and instead, purchases are approved (or denied) on a case-by-case basis depending on your spending patterns.
What's the interest rate? The application listed 14.99% or 21.99%. The one given depends upon the applicants credit score/history.
What are the requirements? It's tough to say because I haven't heard any recent feedback from people who have applied but my guess would be a FICO score of 700 and up would probably be approved.
What are the signup promotions/offers? Nothing too exciting - 5,000 points which is equal to $50 cash back. I've reviewed the Priceline credit card multiple times and don't recall the bonus ever being very high (maybe up to $100). Sometimes they offer a 0% introductory rate on balance transfers too.
Should you apply or not?
I must say, Barclays has improved this program quite a bit compared to the past! The 5x points on "Name Your Own Price" purchases is good - but if you're like me - you rarely use that feature on their website, so that category of spending might not benefit you much.
However the 2x points on everything else makes it one of the best credit card deals around, in terms of cash back value. As to whether the customer service is of equal caliber... that's a whole other topic. There are many Barclays credit card reviews/comments posted on this site and let's just say most of them aren't pretty. However they aren't about the Priceline.com card specifically, so maybe [hopefully] this one has better service.
Conclusion: The Priceline Visa card is now definitely worth considering. I know they've changed the credit card program quite a bit over the years so it will be interesting to see if they are able to keep such a generous program viable in the long run.
Other 2% credit card offers?
There aren't many the give a full 2% rewards, but a few still existing. If you want to see what else is out there, you can check out credit cards with 2% cash back on everything for comparison.
