Maurices Credit Card Review: A Bad Idea?
Considering the Maurices credit card? Before you fill out that application, you probably will want to read this review first.
Don’t get me wrong, I love shopping at Maurices! They have some fabulous looks and styles when you want something casual yet trendy. In fact I recently got the cutest top there not too long ago. When I was checking out they asked me if I wanted to apply for a Maurices credit card. I didn’t even know they had their own card! I decided to go home and research this to see what the deal was with it…
Maurices Store
First of all, I thought I would dig up a little info about the store. They are based out of Duluth, Minnesota. It’s actually been around a very long time (since 1931) and they now have over five hundred stores.
Maurices Credit Card
The Good
If you have poor credit this may be an option to go. It sounds like you don’t need a high credit score to get approved and there is no annual fee. Like most store cards, they also give you a discount on your first purchase with the card. They also are known to send out a $5 coupon on your birthday.
The Bad
The interest rate is extremely high, at the time of this credit card review it is 22.99%. So if you have a balance this is not the way to go. You can only use this at Maurices stores.
Also, it sounds like the credit limits are extremely low, sometimes as little as $200 or $300 according to feedback I've read elsewhere on the net. In theory, it's possible that wouldn't be the best for your credit score, because you don’t want to use more than 30% of your limit at any given time according to many credit experts. So if you were given a low limit like $200, 30% of that only equals $60… that won’t do you much good
The Verdict
Maurices is a good company. Most store cards do have low limits, so that's no reason to discriminate against the Maurices credit card.
A Better Choice? (sponsored offer)
Maurices may be a good starter card as long you don’t carry a balance. However, if you are a student you may want to consider a card from Discover. They have one that gives up to 5% cash back in various categories (including clothing stores!) which rotate throughout the year. They have a student version too so that would probably be a better card to build your credit since it is associated with a major payment network and can be used almost everywhere. Here’s the scoop on the no annual fee Discover card (both the student and regular version)
