Rather than Turkey, what I find surprising is India. Credit cards continue to be extremely unpopular there despite their new middle class which has come about in the past couple decades. The vast majority of the country still lives in poverty, but I am referring to the upper middle class - from what I have heard they largely prefer paper over plastic.
Disclosure: I am a moderator/paid staff of this site, which does have advertising relationships with some credit cards that are discussed. Regardless, anything I say is my honest opinion.
