    Question total amount of transaction volume at Visa

    If Visa is the biggest credit card company out there I want to know how much they do in total transaction volume... anyone know If they have over 5 billion in revenue and you figure that is 2% of the sale that must mean there amount of purchases that go through them is around a 1/4 trillion or more Thats a lot of money!!!

    The reason I ask is if Visa is the biggest out there then they could be a good investment if they are skimming their fees of all these transactions. Too bad I don't have any $$$ to buy into them

    Hey man, you have a centurion below your name you must have money

    Below just find a article from the NY Times about Visa (quite old but still). That should answer your question:

    ////////////////
    Published: March 27, 2003

    Visa International Inc. said today that its United States unit processed $989 billion in transactions in 2002, or 8.1 percent more than a year earlier, as more customers used debit cards.

    The number of Visa credit, debit, commercial, prepaid and other cards rose to 386 million from 373 million as the company processed more than 14.4 billion transactions, John Abrams, a spokesman for the company, said.

    The number of cards was 9.1 percent higher than the 13.2 billion transactions that Visa processed a year earlier, Mr. Abrams said.

    The volume of Visa's check cards, or debit cards, rose 17.2 percent, to $380 billion, from $324 billion and now represents more than a third of the company's transaction volume, the company said. Visa's credit card volume rose 3.1 percent, to $609 billion, from $591 billion.

    I tell ya Visa and Mastercard have a good game going -take a cut of every purchase and make money whether the guy pays his credit card bill or not. If they're doing over a trillion in volume that's a nice amount of green they must be raking in.

    if they are doing that much then i wonder how much american express is doing? i think i heard that amex still processes the most in payments in the united states as far as dollar value because their customers spend more. i could be wrong on that but pretty sure i'm not.

    Although Visa does not lend any money and merely facilitates the transactions they are not immune to the recession. With the state of the economy and an overall reduction in spending among all walks of life, the total volume of purchases will decrease.

    Default credit card purchase volume marketshare

    Actually I looked this up because I couldn't believe Visa had more marketshare. Here's what I found and as expected American Express is number 3, Visa number 1, Mastercard number 2. It did say though that Amex is number one in the small business segment and they do over $200 billion in volume for that alone.

    Amex is gaining ground though and catching up with Mastercard.

    Well we have to keep in mind that Amex issued the perfect product (Blue) to really compete against the Visa & MC products.

    Amex is the #1 credit card issuer if you look at it by number of cards issued by a bank - Amex, B of A, Chase and so on. Visa & MC don't issue cards so they aren't part of it. B of A is #2 I know that because I heard them saying something about it on the news.

    Keep an eye on Discover they will have the most growth here. 6% marketshare now but they are accepted at almost all the same places as the big boys. They keep up their reward cards you'll be seeing a bunch more folks switching to them.
