Easily Amex Platinum! If I were Amex, I would retaliate by having a commercial for the centurion with something that says, "beware of imitators" haha

I say the 'black card' is a good business attempt to capture the business of many, many consumers who want to have the perceived luxury a black card offers but don't quite qualify for the original Amex Centurion. Visa is cashing in on this trust me. 1% of total worldwide cardholders is a lot of $$$ @ $450 a pop.

They let Amex build the hype and cash in on their thunder.

I for one don't care. Imitation is a great compliment and a Centurion card is still a Centurion card.
Amex Centurion - Primary use it for everything card
Royal Bank Visa Gold - only used when establishment does not accept Amex

This is true, but then again, you don't care because you already have a centurion haha :P

To be honest, I always wanted one BUT never did anything out of the ordinary either to get one. I just did my day to day thing and was totally surprised when one day I got this big @ss wooden box with an invite inside.

Always believed if I got it (invite) then great! If not, then there really is nothing else I can do about it either.

To be honest JCarter, I don't know! LOL. I know it's pretty new here in Canada no more that 3-4 years maybe? I do spend a lot on the card and maybe that plus my long standing loyalty (since 89) triggered the "hey, there's a prime sucker to give the Centurion Card to" requirement which I obviously bought into! hahhah

Yeah, that's what I would recommend. That way you won't get too dissapointed if it takes a while for the invite to come.
